Resize an image for Instagram in 2026: all formats
Instagram has multiplied formats over the years: square, portrait, landscape, story, reel, profile. And each format has a different optimal size in 2026. Serve the wrong size and your image appears blurry, badly cropped, or pixelated — catastrophic for engagement. Here are the exact dimensions for each Instagram format in 2026, and how to resize your visuals correctly.
Square photo: the historical format (1080 × 1080)
Square format (ratio 1:1) is Instagram's original format, launched in 2010. It remains the most used on the feed because it displays everywhere without crop: on mobile, desktop, web app, profiles, hashtags. Instagram's recommended dimension in 2026 is 1080 × 1080 pixels.
Using a higher resolution (e.g., 2048 × 2048) doesn't change displayed quality — Instagram resizes everything to 1080. Conversely, an image below 1080 × 1080 will be upscaled by Instagram, producing a blurry and pixelated rendering.
Square format remains the default choice for: e-commerce product photos, quotes, editorial posts, illustrations, short infographics. If you have doubt about which format to use, 1:1 square is almost always a good answer.
Our PixFlow tool (pixflow.tech/en/resize-image) lets you resize and crop to 1080 × 1080 in one click, with automatic ratio preservation if you prefer.
Portrait photo: the format dominating 2026 (1080 × 1350)
Since 2023, Instagram has clearly tilted in favor of portrait format: it occupies more space on the mobile feed (which has become the main engagement zone), captures more attention, and performs better on organic reach statistics.
Recommended dimension in 2026: 1080 × 1350 pixels (ratio 4:5). Don't exceed 1350 in height — beyond, Instagram crops the bottom of the image in passing and you lose what you planned at the visual bottom.
Portrait 4:5 is ideal for: people portraits (the main subject occupies more screen), lifestyle photos, editorial posts with bottom text, immersive product ads. It's the format Meta now recommends for paid campaigns — generating CTR 30% higher than square per their 2024 study.
Warning: if your original photo is 9:16 (typical of a story screenshot or raw vertical photo), it doesn't fit in 4:5 without crop. Decide in advance what you keep and what you cut.
Story and Reel: full screen 9:16 (1080 × 1920)
Stories and reels use full vertical screen: ratio 9:16, optimal dimensions 1080 × 1920 pixels. It's the native format of a smartphone held vertically, so the most immersive on mobile.
In a story, top pixels (about 250 px) are masked by username and profile icon, and bottom pixels (about 300 px) are occupied by reply button and controls. The actually visible and exploitable zone is between 250 and 1620 pixels in height — about 1080 × 1370 pixels at center.
For reels, it's the same constraint but more subtle: bottom 200 pixels display caption and comment icon, and top name + sound button occupy 150 pixels. Design your visual thinking that critical text must stay within the central 1500 pixels to not be truncated.
A common mistake: posting a 1080 × 1080 square story. Instagram displays it with huge white bands at top and bottom, looking amateur. Always prepare the story at the right 9:16 ratio.
Landscape photo: format to avoid except special cases (1080 × 566)
Landscape format (1080 × 566, ratio 1.91:1) is technically supported by Instagram, but has two big flaws in 2026: it occupies less screen on mobile (where 95% of Instagram engagement lives), and it's regularly cropped or trimmed at display depending on context (profile, hashtag, exploration, search).
When to use it anyway: panoramic photos where landscape ratio is intentional (sunset, urban skyline, horizontal group photo), paid ads specifically designed for this format with side call-to-actions, or content reused from YouTube/blog in 16:9.
In most other cases, crop your landscape to portrait 4:5 or square 1:1. You'll lose the edges, but gain visual impact on the feed. If the image is worth being seen in its full landscape ratio, post it on Facebook or X — not Instagram.
Our PixFlow tool (pixflow.tech/en/crop-image) offers all these ratios as presets: 1:1, 4:5, 9:16, 1.91:1, plus free mode. You load your landscape, choose the ratio, and crop with real-time preview.
Profile photo: a special case (320 × 320 displayed as circle)
Instagram profile photo displays in a circle, at highly variable sizes depending on context: 320 × 320 on the web profile version, 80 × 80 on the mobile feed, 64 × 64 in comments. Instagram recommends uploading at 320 × 320 minimum, but in practice, upload at 800 × 800 for margin on Retina screens and future evolutions.
Upload: square format that will be displayed as circle. So prepare your image with the subject well centered, not too close to edges (corners will be masked by circular crop). Our PixFlow LinkedIn Maker tool (also serves for Instagram, pixflow.tech/en/linkedin-maker) automatically applies centered circular cropping and exports as high-quality PNG.
Common mistakes: group photo (Instagram crops anyone), reduced landscape photo (tiny face), photo with subject in a corner (will be masked by circular crop). Always: face centered, occupying 60% of visible area, neutral background.
Carousel: preserve ratio between slides
Instagram carousel (multi-images in a single post, up to 10) imposes a constraint: all slides must have the SAME aspect ratio, otherwise Instagram forces them to a common ratio and arbitrarily crops content.
The strategy in 2026: choose a ratio (1:1 square or 4:5 portrait), resize ALL your slides to the same format before upload. Our PixFlow tool lets you batch process 10 images in a single operation with identical target dimension.
Most performing formats for a carousel: 4:5 portrait (occupies more mobile screen, maximizes swipe rate per Meta studies), or 1:1 square (consistent rendering everywhere). Avoid landscape 1.91:1 for a carousel — it loses 40% visual space compared to portrait.
Visual trick: create a continuity effect between slides (the scene overflows from one slide to the next) to encourage swiping. This requires upstream design work but multiplies engagement by 3-5 times per Meta statistics.
The right Instagram formats in 2026: square 1080 × 1080 for versatility, portrait 1080 × 1350 for organic performance, story/reel 1080 × 1920 for full screen, landscape 1080 × 566 only if necessary, profile 800 × 800 square that will be cropped as circle. All your images must be prepared in these sizes BEFORE upload: Instagram resizes, but doesn't guess your cropping intentions. Our PixFlow tool handles all these ratios in a few clicks — the right format at the right weight, ready to publish.
